What is a CSA?

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture.  CSA programs involve a mutual commitment between farmers and their community.  In purchasing a share of the harvest before the growing season begins, the community shareholder provides farmers with much needed and appreciated finances at the leanest and most expensive stage of the growing season (spring).  In return, the shareholder will have secured a portion of food from the  local harvest and will have contributed to the stability of their local food market.  Supporting our growing efforts at the onset of the season greatly enables us to grow and harvest more effectively during the entire season.  As a member of our CSA you will receive a weekly share of fresh high-quality organic produce grown right here in the cariboo on Big Rock Ranch, you’ll not only get to learn more about where your food comes from, but also take in the best of seasonal eating!

*Currently we’re making the change over to a new flock and won’t be supplying eggs until Spring 2017, but please feel free to subscribe with us on our home page at the bottom and we’ll keep you updated as to when the hens start laying*

Our laying flock is a mixed flock of heritage chicken breeds. Seeing we feel strongly about sustainability and home grown we feel it was in our best interest to keep our hens as close to their genetics as possible, and why shouldn’t we? We chose to go with a mixed flock of Black Copper Marans, Amerucanas, Welsummers, Austrlops, Olive Eggers, Buff Orpingtons, Lavender Orpingtons, Barred Rocks, Cou Cou De Malines and Dominiques. Albeit it they aren’t the most prolific layers, but boy do they make beautiful delicious eggs. Every egg comes unique in shape and colour, making our dozen eggs a treat every time you open a carton. Our hens are free range where they get to express their natural habits of scratching, looking for bugs and having dust baths, along with free ranging we supplement them with an organic grain and premix our own bird seed for treats during the day. With free choice to grass, grain, and bugs they lay some rich yummy eggs.

Our pastured poultry birds are Mistral Gris, which are a great alternative chicken breed from your typical cornish cross. They were bred from Barred Rocks and several other heritage breeds using old-fashioned breeding techniques — no genetic modifications, and no ‘terminal’ genes, raised for their amazing flavour, full breast, strength and health. After much research we decided to raise them on grass in a moveable coop, protected from predators and the elements where they’re moved onto fresh grass daily, are fed organic grains 3x a day and get to enjoy life as a chicken moving around, eating grass and bugs.

Our pigs are a Berkshire Tamworth heritage breed cross. We raise them and rotationally graze them free range, in the forest, with access to grassland, where they get to root, farrow in the mud, nestle deep in hay piles and just be a pig. Between grass, grubs, and wild foraging they also enjoy organic vegetable scrapes from our garden and are raised on a diet of whole, non-gmo, local grain.
